Flora TAP14389-1
Flora, The Roman
Goddess of the Flowers, belongs to those tapestries which featured Edward Burne-Jones's early figure designs. Incorporating Morris' decorative details, Flora was woven between 1884 and 1885 at Merton Abbey.
"I am the handmaid of
earth," begins the ancient text, which borders this lush French-woven jacquard tapestry honoring the blooming Roman goddess of spring and fertility. Uniting a figure by Edward Burne- Jones with a richly ornamental background by William Morris, this tribute to one of mythology's most enduring female figures was originally produced in the renowned weaving studio of Merton Abbey in 1885. The slender rabbits, feathered fowl, aromatic flowers, and even Flora herself appear to blossom from the tapestry's dark background into a fresh, living season.
