FACTFILE
The Beauvais Tapestry
Factory was created in 1664 by Louis XIV to rival the tapestry factories of Flanders and from the 18th century specialised in the "basse lisse" technique. The factory became famous for its woven chair tapestries. Destroyed in 1940 by war bombings, the Factory's workshop was transferred to Paris, to the Gobelins Factory. In the ranking of French tapestry factories, Beauvais occupied an intermediate position between the Gobelins, which worked almost exclusively for the king, and Aubusson and Felletin, which produced items for a bourgeois clientele. |
