The Four Seasons and
Four Elements were
depicted in the PortiŠres
des dieux, one of the
Gobelins most popular
series.

Diana, goddess of hunting,
equipped with a bow and
quiver, is flanked by
hunting dogs and by game
she symbolises the Earth.

Many think of Tapestries
as being one-off pieces
made for Kings. Many of
the Medieval pieces were,
however, series such as
the 'PortiŠres des dieux'
were geared primarily to
commercial objectives.
The potential customer
had a choice between
eight different subjects
and numerous border
types, but could also
choose between various
background colours (bright
yellow, green, blue,
purple). This explains the
enormous success of
these eminently
decorative tapestries and
their countless repetitions.
The same can be said of
the pastorals and Lucas
months series.
