The Forest T7794-1
William Morris designed
The Forest Tapestry for his patron Alexander Ionides in 1887. It is a remarkable example of contemporary collaboration - Philip Webb, a lifelong friend and well known architect, drew the animals; Henry Dearle, Morris' first tapestry assistant and deputy, designed the traditional millefleurs in the foreground; Morris was responsible for the ever present acanthus leaves and the overall design.
The original is in the
Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
