Tulip TAP9182
Fully Woven Size 144 x 70
cms (56 x 27 inches)
It is almost impossible to
think of a more Dutch flower than the Tulip, but its origins lie in China. Around 1000 AD they were cultivated in what is now Turkey. There is a story of a Persian prince Farhad, who was deeply in love with the virgin Shirin. One day he received the erroneous message that his beloved had died. Overpowered with an unbearable grief he mounted his favourite horse and galloped to his death by jumping over the rock cliffs. From his numerous wounds blood soaked the earth. And suddenly one drop turned into a Tulip, the symbol of his perfect love. Looking at the drop-shaped Tulip bulb it is not difficult to imagine the origin of this story. |
